Widows, especially in rural India, face serious challenges including poverty, poor health, social isolation, and lack of resources. Globally, there are approximately 256 million widows, many of whom suffer from deprivation

and inequality, prompting the United Nations to designate June 23 as International Widows' Day. In India, widowhood often strips women of their identity and rights, exposing them and their children to financial insecurity, exploitation, and limited access to education. In Barria, a child protection project supported by the CRS found that widows experience neglect and disrespect from both family and community. With limited financial means, they struggle to take care of themselves and their children. The community expressed the need for support, and widows expressed that employment and social change could improve their lives. In response, the BDSSS launched the project for those widows with the help of KFB Austia in eight villages to address these issues. Vision & Mission of the Bettiah Diocesan Social Service Society.
